Parkinson's is Hard Work!

The Parkinson's Unity Walk has come and gone and the local Sunnyvale Parkinson's Walk has done the same.  All the excitement about winning the Parkinson's Disease Foundation T shirt contest has dissipated.  So what's next?  Well, I'm thinking about submitting some artwork to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation; they're looking for artwork for their calendar and online gallery.  Here's a link:

That's all for now, though.  I'm so tired; fatigue is my constant companion.  Ever notice that Parkinson's causes fluxes in the gravitational field?  I swear, sometimes I feel like I'm warping the space/time continuum.  It's so hard to do everything, from brushing my teeth to lifting and carrying.  By the end of the day, I feel like I've been digging ditches.  Amazingly enough, though, I've found that a little extra exercise really helps in the long run.  Seems counter intuitive, doesn't it?

Parkinson's is hard work, but you just have to work through it, I guess!

we must work through....the only other option is to give in.

Absolutely! It's either "keep hiking" or "sit by the side of the road forever". I'll keep hiking, no matter how steep it gets.

Thank you for this blog. I was diagnosed with parkinsons Apr 2011.My most frustrating symptom is at times I get slurred speech. I work in sales and this can be a problem. Also at times my left hand freezes on me, especially if I am cold. May God bless you and your efforts here.. Luis in Puerto Rico

Hi Luis,
Nice to hear from you; all the way from Puerto Rico!

Your line of work must make this particularly difficult. I don't have much of a speech problem myself yet, but I have heard from other patients that singing helps. Also, seeing a voice specialist or going to voice training classes like the Lee Silverman method can be helpful.

I hope you will get the help you need to get your symptoms under control. The first few years are the hardest; I actually feel better now than I did at diagnosis, but it took a while to get here.

Thanks for writing!

I'm a lucky lady. I have a wonderful husband of 27 years, a fantastic 25 year old son (I'm so proud of him!) a loving and supportive family, the best friends in the world, a job that I love, and... Parkinson's Disease. I was diagnosed in September 2006. That was a jolt, but I'm learning to deal with it.
